CHAIR THROWING
LONDON, June 7. Students disported themselves in timehonoured fashion at Aberdeen University yesterday, when Mr Carnegie delivered his address os rector. Students Were present in large numbers, and one section was very rowdy and disorderly. Students were pitched into tho air in most alatming manner, and chairs and articles of personal wear were thrown about. Then cat-calls, imitation -bugle sounds, baaing of sheep, and other weird noises interrupted Mr Carnegie’s remarks. For a time there was perfect pandemonium. Eows of chairs fastened together by boards were tossed in the air, several / being completely smashed, and carpeting was thrown from one part of the building to another. Principal George Adam Smith appealed for order, and Mr Carnegie was afterwards attentively heard. Ho sat down amid enthusiastic cheering. After the delivery of the address, however, more disorder occurred, and the proceedings were delayed, i Chairs, mats, and pieces of carpet were again thrown about, tho students thumped with their feet, and sang and whistled. Professor Souter, who proposed a vote of thanks, was* quite inaudible a few feet from the platform. Several professors endeavoured to quell tho disturbance, and the Principal again appealed for order. Mr Carnegie and Principal Smith got away, from the quadrangle before the students left the hall. Mr Carnegie’s address was, mainly confined to homely advice. It has been issued as a pamphlet, in which l Mr Carnegie adopts his reformed spelling. Perhaps it was to this that the students took objection. Here are a few of Mr Carnegie's innovations:— Hav, lorn, emit, welth. hetthy, befor, sends, devolv, yung, iite. reacht, derides, UetTi, bceaus. tuch. practis, dremt. a-kt, (leuter, alreddy, creativ, nselv, and confirmd.
