THE LABOUR MARKET

WORK FOE WILLING WORKERS. Most satisfactory reports continue to be furnished by tho Labour Department respecting the condition of tho labour' market locally. No difficulty at all is being experienced in finding work for all men who are physically fit and .willing to take what offers. Last week, for instance, the department assisted fortyone men to work one day, and thirty-six more the next day. Many of these were new arrivals from Homo by the lonic. All applicants who came from this vessel were at once supplied with work. The day after she cam© in offers of sufficient work for all her people who wanted it were received by the department in its ordinary correspondence, this being clear proof of tho intensity of existing demand. Two requests, one from the Wairarapa* and the other from Marl, borough, practically absorbed all tho available immigrants that day. In addition to the large number of men sent directly to work, the department helps very many indirectly by supplying them with lists of manufacturers engaged in. tho industry to which they belong. The men ars ’ thus enabled to make personal application and in very many cases they meet with success. Tho only class of applicants to whom the department can hold but little hope are the physical weaklings who cannot do more than clerical or the lightest of work. Such men have small chance of success, though the department does what it can to help them. Work is wanted for a number of them now.
