COMPETITIONS SOCIETY
BEQUEST TO THE COUNCIL. FURTHER SUBSIDY ASKED FOE. A deputation from tho Now Zealand Competitions Society waited upon the Enanoe committee of the city council yesterday asking that the council should grant a further subsidy of £3O ‘ (making _CCO) towards tho funds of the society's last festival. The deputation consisted of tho Eov. Father Hickson, Messrs W. H. Atack, H. Plimmer, and J. Dykes. Father Hickson said the society had paid over £2jo to the council as rent for tho Town Hall and Concert Chamber, and had decided to take both halls for the next festival, commencing on October 16th and lasting about a fortnight. Although the first festival was an unbounded success, yet owing to the expenses incurred, it being the society’s first venture. and to extra advertising costs, tho credit balance was not so large as it might have been. The society was not a money-making concern, any surplus madein one year being carried forward to the next year’s festival and utilised in increasing tho value of the prizes. This year’s festival promised to bo on a greater scale than that of last year, and it was hoped to arrange for a carnival week to be hold in Wellington during the comptitions. Messrs Atack and Plimmer spoke in support of tho application, tho latter saying that tho Auckland City Council granted the competitions society in that city JSSO, and suggesting that Welling ton should not bo behind in this respect. The committee promised to consider tho question and report to the council. The society is prepared to receive applications focjnembership for tho ensuing season. The membership fee has been fixed at .£1 Is, which entitles members to a single season ticket with the right to obtain a further season ticket on the further payment of 10s 6d,
