THE LAW DEFIED.

Charged with having employed shop assistants after 9 o'clock on a recent, Saturday evening, several Cninese storekeepers, Hop i-'ook Chong, Joe bee Bros., J. Kwong bc-o and Co., Sing on Tie Bros., Sing Keo and , Co., kung Lee and Co.. Wah Kc-e bros., J. Wong ,Wah, Wong Koon, Wong Sheo and Co.. Sing on Tie and Co., Yeo Chong Wing and Co., and Wong Young Chong, appeared before Mr W. G, Riddell, S.M., at the Magistrate's Court yesterday. Ernest be Cren, Inspector of Factories, who prosecuted, said that many of the Chinese in the city dclied the law in. regard to employing assistants after aours. Inspectors ireouently explained the law to them, but "no savee" was the usual reply. However, the depart ment had at last decided to take action. Mr brandon, who appeared for each de fendant, and entered pleas of guilty, stated that the Chinese Consul had now undertaken to have the law thoroughly , r-xpiained to the Chinese shopkeepers. Having previously been convicted for a similar offence to the one in question, , Sing on Tie and Co., Yee Chong Wing i and Co., and Wong Young Chong and 0., wore fined 10s, with costs 7s. The .emaining defendants were each fined ,oe, with costs 7s.
