AUCKLAND FESTIVAL. PRESS ASSOCIATION, AUCKLAND, December 10. Tho Auckland competitions were brought to a successful conclusion last night. A number of special prizes were given, including the following: Essay on '‘Bishop Selwyn"—Mr Carter (Wellington) 1, Mrs Andrew (Mt. Rosfcili) 2. Original story (amateurs) —Miss L. Eastgate (Auckland) 1, Mrs J. D. Cray (Wellington) 2. j Third, and fifth places in solo pianist recital—Mr Baxter Buckley (Invercargill), .• Miss Barry Snpdgrass (To Puke), Miss N. Ridley (Dunedin). Premier lady vocalist—Miss L. Gardner (New Lynn). Premier male vocalist—Mr A. Ripley (Dunedin). Premier lady elocutionist Miss Z. Bartley (Auckland). Premier gentleman elocutionist —Mr H. Borrodalo (Auckland). Some interesting remarks on competitions were made by Professor Ives, who judged the musical sections. In some respects, he said, the competitions had Impressed him very favourably; in others ho had been a little disappointed. The beet work was done in the violin and pianoforte sections. Excellent work was being done in Auckland in teaching the violin. If Miss Bosworth were sent -to study in the great musical centres of the Old World she would bo a credit to New Zealand. In tho solo pianist recital the music too easy for such an- important prize,“ and gave chances to players who/really had no claim to be in the class at all.
