HAILSTORM AT JOHANNESBURG. (Received December 10, 5.5 p.m.) CAPETOWN, December 9. A disastrous hailstorm at Johannesburg put an end .to tho drought which has recently prevailed there. IMMIGRATION—UNION MINISTER’S VIEW.’ (Received December 10, 5.5 p.m.) PRETORIA, December 9. General Smuts, Union Minister of tho Interior, speaking at Pretoria, emphatically declared in favour of immigration. Ho advocated white immigration, and said that statistics pointed to tho alarming fact that the coloured people were increasing in greater proportion than the whites. Machinery ought to be established for getting white labour in South Africa to work at a reasonable firing wage. If they were unable to do that they must draw labour from countries where it was plentiful.
