❖❖❖ CIVIL SERVICE TOURNAMENT.

The first lawn tennis tournament held officially in connection with the Public Service was run off last week under tho auspices of the Civil Service Amateur Athletic ’ Club, which organised a big sports carnival for St. Andrew's Day. The tenuis took place on the'Newtown Club's courts and, proved most enjoyable, there being many interesting matches. Operations were conducted by Messrs P. A.‘ Lewis, B. W. Millier, and J. P. O'Leary, the last named player also being one of tho haudicanpers in conjunction with Mr T. H. Jones. The self-same handicapping was not quite a model of perfection, though the men's singles panned out splendidly. E. A. Lewis (scratch), in reaching the final, won his four, games by narrow margins, as follows: v. Judd (40), 60 —56; v. Pair© (30), 60—55; v. Harris (28), GO--57; v. Allen (35), 60 —57. However, as Ivowas was giving away points almost approaching the limit, he could have gone well’on by the time his opponents readied 60., Altogether he scored 240 aces to 92. Rcdward (owe 2), in reaching the final on the other side of the draw, mad© easy going of it to the semi-final, where Jeffery (scratch) made things warm, the old general just getting home by vantage points. In the fourth round Eedward, in defeating Power (37); scored 52 points to 8, the latter retiring when Eedward led 50—15. On© of the best games .of the, whole tournament was that between Hunter (owe 10) and Jeffery (scratch). Both played, well, though Hunter is not in his best season, but never got in tho lead, though close enough at different occasions, as evidenced by the final result, Jeffery 60 — : 57. M'arrdner (5), a Brougham Hill stalwart of other d'ays, put up two splendid performances before going out badly to Harris (28) in the third round. H© started off by defeating Pratt (25) 61 —59, and, strange to relate, wound up the second, round with another vantagepoint victory, Bamfield (35) being defeated 62—60. .

Bert Millier was disappointing, as the ■writer fancied him to win op .23. He readhed tho fourth round with a byo and two fine wins, then going out badly to T. H. Allen (35) by 49 points to 60. _ Miss Hill (Labour Department) had no difficulty iu winning the ladies’ singles from the limit mark. Mieses Atmore and dark were disappointing and played below their true form, though on the handicaps they could not have won in any case. Miss Buchan played well, but lost badly in the final to Miss Hill, who not only 'had all the luck but was let in by the handicanpers with at least .five points too many. Miss V. Saxon’s performance in tfhe semi-final against Miss Hill was the best of the event. In the men’s doubles t'he_ final was foughit out by two limit pairs, Harris and Twomey (40) v. Allen, and Tattle (tO), and it proved an even go, the former winning by a conple of points (60 — 58). Hunter and Jeffery (owo 5) pnt in a great effort against, Toms and Sheehy (35) in tho third round, winning 60 —50. At one stage of the game the winners scored 28 consecutive points! The remark previously mode that Misses Atmore and Clark did not do themselves justice is proved by the final of the Indies’ doubles. They were asked to concede Misses Saxon and Hill 1“ points in 50—admittedly too many—but instead of making any headway at all, Misses Saxon and Hill won 50—29, scoring 33 points to 29, or four more than tho pair set to stand them up points! TENNIS IN BLENHEIM. Tho following paragraph culled from a Blenheim, exchange will be of interest to the local tennis world: “After some years of more or* less half-hoaried activity, the Marlborough Lawn Tennis Association has been rej uvonatod through tho efforts of some of the keener spirits, nnd seems to bo well on the way’\ to carry out its main plea for existence, viz., the fostering of ■ tho game in the province. To that end, all the clubs have been persuaded to affiliate, and the council, consisting of the delegates of the clubs and the usual officers, has initiated a series of inter-club matches. Now rules have been adopted, in order to give a good workable basis, and with such a keen sport as Mr Shirley Parker as hon. secretary, the future prospects a r the association are bright. In inaugurating the competitions, the difficulty of having some clubs so much stronger than others has-been met by a system of handicapping." Since ‘‘Glengarry’s” comments on October 28th, tho Marlborough association has taken a new lease of life and apparently tennis is now on a better footing than ever previously in the history of the district. ' The idea of handicapping for the weekly matches is somewhat unusual, but is tho only solution as regards Marlborough, inasmuch as tho leading chib (the Marlborough L.T.C.) possesses all the best players, and unless some such system were m force the matches would be very onesided In referring to the handicapping, tho Blenheim writer merely states that the 'han(Coutinned on following page column 7.)
