Tho Hon. A. T. Ngata (representative of the native race on the Executive), who has been returned unopposed for the Eastern Maori seat, returned to Wellington last night. A Melbourne cablegram states that Signor Darnmaeco, one of the principals in the Melba Drain! Opera Company, is dead. He had been ailing for some time A cable message from Adelaide announces the death of Sir -fenkin Coles, exSpeaker of the Legislative Assembly. Ho occupied the chair for twenty-one sessions, and never missed a sitting. This is a world’s record. Owing to ill-health ho 'recently resigned the Speakership, which he had held since 18IX). Ho was born in Sydney in 1812, and educated at the Blue Coat School, London. In 1856 ho arrived in South Australia, and in 1875 entered Parliament. He was Commissioner of Crown Lands in tho Colton Ministry (1534-S) and Commissioner of Public Works in the same Government; also Commissioner of Crown Lauds in tho Playford Ministry (1887-9). He w-as a director of the Bank of Adelaide, a director and local chairman of the Citizens’ Life Assurance Company, and a considerable landholder in various parts of South Australia.
