NOTES AND COMMENTS

(By "Tho Judge.”) Nominations for tlio Marton TaratahiCartertm,- Wairarnpa, Hawke’s Bay, Waikanao, Hutt Valley, North Otago, and Cromwell meetings closo this evening. • * ■ Tho Argentine Derby, run at Buenos Ayres, was won -by As de Aspadas, a son of the English horse Diamond Jubilee. It was good news to learn that tho C.J.C. committee had upheld the appeal of G. Cudby ' (owner), C. Pritchard (trainer), and V. Coleman (rider), against their disqualifies, lion in connection with tho running oi Gold Bird at the Cup meeting. As was pointed out in these columns at the time that there was no inconistent running whatsoever as between tho first and second horses, and how-the stewards came to arrive at their verdict it is quite impossible to conceive. There aro very many instances when stewards - should tako-action but-do not. Hero the reverse was the case, and as tho result a mistake was made. iiow. ever, ‘'all’s well that ends well.” The injured parties have been vindicated, while tho stewards have admitted their error.

India's biggest race only attracted fourteen nominations, and of those five belonged to Mr A. A- Apcar, and three to Mr J. C. Gaulstann (for whom Wootton is to ride). It looks as though the issue has been narrowed down to last. year’s . winner, Mayfoal, Prince Rupert, and tho ox-New Zealander Aborigine. In one of tho hurdle races at Takapuna, E. B. Ross had three of his eons riding horses lie had trained. The circumstance of three brothers riding in an event over jumps is very unusual. Ross, ‘it will bo remembered, owned Voltigeur 11., when the old grey won the Great Northern. Steeplechase,, and has rarely been., without: a-; jumper in /his stable. ~

Particulars to hand of the race for the Cambridgeshire show that Long Set, the winner, was almost friendless, going out at a very long price. The. son of Uabelais and Belle Perdue nevertheless won in a canter by six lengths, about the easiest'success in the long history of the race.

A jockey, named Maher rode ©very winner at a yace meeting held at Glen Inues, New,' South Wales, the other day. It would seem ..there, is something in a name after all. It is v seldom that a mare attains a very great ago, hut Busy Bee, who dropped dead.at Pranjip Park (Victoria) recently,- was then thirty years old. She was only three years old when she bred the first of her long list of foals. The best of these was Hymettus, who i won the Caulfield Cup in 1898, and again in 1801.

The Criterion' Stakes, of 1000 sovs, one of the big '.events of; the Houghton meeting at Newmarket,’ was ' won* by Bard Rosebery’s filly Chairman (Cicero—Eosalba). She. is,evidently a smart'galloper as in eight', starts has won ,four races and been sbcohd thrice.

Miscount is putting up something of a record for running into second place. In. Englaud.be has his counterpart in Lord Carnarvon’s Mustapha, who is one of the unluckicst horses that ever looked through a bridle. In addition to just missing innumerable other important handicaps during the^past.two seasons, in which he has nearly always ran second or third, Mustapha has now been second in .the Cambridgeshire for the third year in succession. The-Possible hors© Seraphic, who paid the largest dividend at the recent Feuding meeting, will bo a starter at Woodville. The chestnut will have many admirers in his approaching engagements. Seatondale, Who finished behind Rill and Master Sylvia in the Railway Welter at reilding, will be amongst the competitors at Woodville. Mr Cameron’s galloper will have many admirers in his races.

The Field Battery filly Deploy continues to train satisfactorily at Tmitham. Mr Boss’s favourite will compete at the Wairarapa Christmas meetings.

Morrivona is bowling along in an attractive manner on the Trentham tracks. The black daughter of Merriweo is receiving. a thorough preparation for the Manawatu Cup. , 'A. Neale, private .trainer to MrD. Buiok, is busy at Awapum with Gold Battery a'nd Aberbrothook, noth of whom will in all probability be seen out at the Mastertou meeting.

G. NeicK the Clarevillo trainer, -has a team for the Woodvillo meeting. It will consist of British Maid, Purakan, and Laird-o-Lethe. All three have been responsible for some excellent training •work and should give a good account of themselves at the gathering named.

WAIRARAPA RACES The Wairarapa Racing Club’s summer meeting will bo held at the well-known Tauherenikau racecourse, on- December 30th and January Ist. Nominations close to-night at 8 o'clock, the principal event on the first day will he the Wairarapa Cup, of 350 sovs, and on the second day the Tauherenikau Handicap is worth 230 sovs. IMOOREE VALLEY HURDLE - RACE Sy Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright MELBOURNE, December 7.
