The High Commissioner ami Lady Hi.ll-Jones spent the week-end in Paris, Kir William's principal object in visiting the French capital was to bo present im Saturday afternoon at the formal Presentation of a .splendid bust of Kin;,' Vldward to the British Chamber of Commerce in Paris, by its* president, M. T. •‘Watson, and to attend the animal dinner of the Chamber which took place in the evening. The presentation look place at the Grand Hotel. Tho boat has been .built at the Poison Iron Works, Toronto, under Mr Fisher’s direction and supervision. # On the 7th of this month a demonstration was given to show the capabilities of the invention. The boat was loaded .with forty passengers and dropped into tho water from a height of 25 leot. The experiment was a complete success. The peculiar mechanism of tho boat keeps the passengers in an upright position at all times, no matter what angle the outside hull may 1 nssurae, and tho air-pump with which it is fitted ensures a sufficient supply of air to tho occupants. Mr Fisher is taking the boat to New York, where a similar demonstration will be given before representatives of the United States Government, after which ho will bring it to I England. ■/ j

Clutsam, the Australian composer, whoso first opera, “A Summer Night,” was given at His Majesty’s with Filch success by Mr Bcecbam, has just had an opera accepted by the director of tho new Ivurfurstan Opera House, in Berlin, which opens in November. Tho work is called “King Harlequin.”. Mr Thomas Leech, who has had many roars’experience as a farmer in Canterbury, has been over in England in search of health for sonic months, arriving hero via Canada. Regarding what ho saw of that country and its farming, MiLeech says ho was' somewhat disappointed, though there is no doubt that Canada is an admirable grain-producing land. If is criticism of English farming is that there aro great quantities of land lying idle that should give employment to thousands and keep them on tho land where they should be. Mr Leech sails to-day by tho Osterley via Suez and Syd.ney on his return to tho Dominion. Lord Plnnket, Now Zealand’s last Governor, ami Lady Plnnket, have left Old Connaught, County Wicklow, and ■have taken a house at Dieppe, where Lady Plnnket and her children aro now in residence. Lord Pluuket is at present in Dublin. At the ordinary quarterly Comitia of tho Koval College of Physicians of London, Mr P. S.
