BRITISH RAILWAY TROUBLE A CONFERENCE AGREED TO. By Teleiranh—Frees Association—OopyrlghV LONDON, December 1. The House of Commons’ invitation to tho railway companies to hold another conference with tho men has been submitted to the companies by Mr Sydney Buxton, President of tho Board of Trade. It is suggested as a basis for the conference that the findings of the Railway Strike Commission should ho accepted in principle and substance by both sides. The council of tho railway companion to-day accepted the invitation. Tho railwaymen’s executive have also agreed to a conference. STRIKE AT SWANSEA. FOUR THOUSAND DOCKERS OUT. LONDON, December 1. During a local strike Messrs Houlder Bros.’ steamer Valhalla arrived at Swansea with men aboard for loading purposes. Four thousand dockers immediately struck. GERMAN METAL-WORKERS. MEN REJECT? SETTLEMENT. BERLIN, December 1. Seventy thousand metal-workers are locked out. They rejected the settlement arrived at between the employers and the union delegates. A STARTLING RUMOUR. ALLEGED ATTEMPT TO POISON NON-STRIKERS. . NEW YORK, December 1. Rumours to tho effect that the garbage men on strike were poisoning the food of non-strikers caused a panic, though the men are still working. The rumours were due to the mysterious death in hospital of a nonstriker. " AUSTRALIAN SEAMEN’S AWARD. ADDITIONAL COST TO SHIPPING COMPANIES. MELBOURNE, December 2. The secretary of the Steamship Owners’ Federation declares that the seamen’s award will cost the companies one hundred thousand pounds more annually, and probably result in increased freights.
