■ j o ” a. I , 1 These clubs will be heartily welcome! Inna a -b fei'aaiyuig . to see new clubi being, formed. On the , other hand, how . ever, some ot our other clubs are detune or moribund. The Port Nicholson Club which had at one time the largest mom : hersnip of any local club, is in a very precarious state. The club lost heavily on account of the postponement of ib last sports meeting, and the present i members are not showing much interest in the club's affairs, and are somewhat ! unwilling to accept office, evidently be- . cause the club is in "low water, ’ its Ha , bin tics being in excess of its assets, j What this club needs is a good hardworking secretary, and an increase oi the fcUDicription to ss. T’he present sub- ! ecription ot 2s 6d hardly covers working j expenses. X hope that the dub wiU soon rise to its former level. The Haw era A. A. Club, formed by H. Burdebin. when in that town, has not had a very successful career since ha had to relinquish the secretaryship on removal from Hawera. The late secretary (Mr Bussell) states that there is no hope'of the club existing this season. ; The New Plymouth Club is in much the same position as Hawera. and must i also be posted on the "defunct" list. j Local Candidates for the New Zealand Team. ■; The following have been nominated by I the Wellington centre for inclusion in the New Zealand team lor the Australasian championships: 100yds—W. will no doubt bo productive of very considerable discussion. That relating to rules in particular has been a bono of : contention in Australia for moutlis past. Clause .(B) reads: “Amateurs shall not loso their status by competing with or against professionals in any game, for which no money prize is oiler fid. “Games” recognised are baseball, cricket, football, hanci-ball and fives, golf, lacrosse, tennis, quoits, racquets, hockey, and bowls, in Australia a number cf' players in Rugby League football (the professional game) are stated to be really “amateurs,” in that they receive no pecuniary benefit whatever from playing League football. The Amateur Sports Federation of Australia treats ail who play in League football as professionals, but certain members. of the Amateur Athletic Association of New South >\ales consider that so long as a man can sign tho amateur declaration, he should be allowed to gompete in events under A.A.A. rules, irrespective of whether he plays League or Rugby Union football. So far the question has not cropped up in New Zealand, but with the growing numbers of players in Northern Union football, a case may arise at any time. Jottings. Mr 0. Anderson has been, appointed lion, secretary of the Canterbury’ Centro N.Z.A.A.A., vice Mr H. E. Hamilton, resigned. Tho belated new rules of the council, over which there has been &o much trouble, have now been planted and issued to the centres. T. Rigg, the Victoria College crack over one and three miles, who ran very prominently in open events two seasons back, is going to start training in earnest after Christmas. Rigg stands a good chance of selection in the centre b team tor the next New Zealand championships. . Several country clubs arc trying to arrange meetings so as to secure the visiting Australian athletes at Christmas as competitors. It is - rumoured, however, that the “Haris Cup” at Christchurch will interfere with the attendance of. the Australians at any meetings that might be arranged. The Athletic Football Amateur Sports • Club is holding an evening sports meeting on the Basin Reserve on Hecemlper Gth. The events set down ior decision are: 75yds club, 220yds and Bbo yds ojieu, .
