FIRST ENGLISH IRONCLAD The Warrior is not to be allowed urn--1 disputed claim to tho honour of having been the first armour-plated ship built in England. Jarrow asserts with authority that the .first ironclad came from its shipbuilding yard, for Sir diaries, Falmer, who was the pioneer of the ironsteel collier, supplied an armoured vessel to tho British Navy for uge against tho forts of Cronstadt. This ship, which was called the Terror, was laid down in 185 G and launched the ; same year. Her hull was of iron, rolled ; armoured plates 4$ inches thick protect- , ed her sides, and she carried twenty ; guns. Peace was declared before she left the Tyne, consequently she never fired a shot, J>ut she nevertheless gives Jarrow the right to claim that the first ironclad ever built in England came from its great shipyards.
