GAULT V. KELLY

THE CHAMPION LOSES THROUGH A FOUL.

AN UNPOPULAR DECISION.

SPECIAL TO THE “ TIIIES. ,, BLENHEIM, October 11

Tli© matclx between Alf- Gault, clianipion of New \2jealand, and Arthur Nelly, the clever Broken Hill boxer, attracted a great crowd to tho Blenheim Town Hall, the building being crowded. COBTAIN RAISER. By way of a preliminary to the big contest tho biograph picture of the Bang-Langford battle in London was shown. Stewart Sst 2lh, and Sim, Sst, nad an even four round draw. XI. Worcester, 9st 3ib, scored an easy points win over Gill, 9st 71b, while Sailor Bunn; lOst, swung in enough rights to have Wallace, lOst, dazed at the end of the fourth round. The Australian crack, Hannan, was also introduced to the spectators. Gault’s weight was given as lOst, and ' Kelly’s at 9s 4lb. The first round was even, no effective work being done. In tho second round Kelly got in a nasty right to tho head, and had a straight lead, hut there was littlo fighting. In the third Gault showed an inclination to go in and mix it. Twice he scored heavy to tho jaw. Kelly clinching, but nothing serious was done. In the fourth there was some hard fighting, Gault particularly scoring with two heavy rights to tho jaw, Kelly jabbing in one or two vicious lefts. GAULT’S ROUND. The fifth was Gault’s, who led all through, a particularly hard fight partly closing Kelly’s right eye, while one to tho jaw shook him. Kelly showed clever footwork, but his blows mostly, failed to connect, and at tho gong ho .was looking ..weak. ~ In the seventh Kelly, rallied and jabbed in a nice tip, but at the close Gault was having all tho best of it, Kelly’s eyes being badly cut. The next was a very willing round, Kelly standing up to his man and mixing things freely, giving as much as he took, and it was anyone’s round. KELLY’S RECOVERY. The ninth showed good recovery by Kelly, I,who scored to the body and also got home an upper cut, which jolted Gault. The latter was much tho fresher, hitting harder than Kelly. In tho tenth round the end came unexpectedly. Gault had been forcing the pace, Kelly slipping to his knee near the ropes. Here Gault struck a blow which appeared a-very obvious foul, and the. referee had no option but to award the fight to Kelly, a decision which, however, did not'give general satisfaction, although it was tho correct one. Mr Hurcomb was referee.
