Ill© New Zealand Baptist Missionary So ciety held its annual meeting to-day, as the seventh, sederunt of tno .Baptist Conference. The now president, the Kev. Knowles Kempton, presided. The secretary (tho Kov. E. A. read the annual report, which stated that the work in Eastern Bengal is being extended, A now church ana other buildings are ‘being erected, and groat interest is being shown by tho young Indians in Bible study. < Mrs Do Carteret, who has been for years in India, has resigned, owing to a breakdown in health. Tho ilev. W. White has been engaged to assist Dr Pettit at Oliaudpur. A church has been formed at BrAhmabaria by tho Itcv. J. Tackle. The treasurer's report was presented by Mr T. E. Toneyciilte, and showed a debit balance on the year’s working of £l9O, anti a total debit balance of £649. Tho Auckland district contributed £605, Wellington £655, Canterbury £320, and Otago and Southland £649, a total of £2llO.
The Rev. J. K. Archor was elected secretary, the Rev. A. North organising secretary, iir A. Hoby treasurer, the Rev. F. \V. MacDonald missionary preacher, and the llev. Howard Elliott deputy-preacher. A missionary conversazione was held in St. X’aul's' school hall in the afternoon.
In the evening a public missionary ideeting wits held, the church 'being 1 crowded. Mr J. G. Fraser, the vice-president, presided. Addresses were delivered by Mrs B&ckJns&Uo, who has just returned from India, and the licv, K. S. Gray, on mission work in connection with the Philadelphia Congress. Miss Cowl© set. apart*'for missionary work, the sermon being preached by the Rev. A. K. 'Wilson (Wanganui). The Rov. R. S. Gray gave a most graphic description of the Russian delegates to the Philadelphia Congress ami of the Baptist work In Russia. Iso complete census Is possible as to the number of Baptists in the Czar's dominion, but, the moderate estimate of Pastor Fetler is 100,000. After a description of the various delegates a.nd their sufferings, Mr Gray appealed for help to Oisaist Pastor Fetler to build a church in St Petersburg, and tho meeting promised £217 for that purpose.
