KARORI TRAMWAYS
THE SHORTER ROUTE PURCHASE OF KELBURNB SERVICE RECOMMENDED. Recently Che Karori Borough Council set up a committee to report on a proposed shorter route to the city. The report was considered by the council in committee, but last night was read in open meeting. After considering the question the committee expressed the following opinions (1) That the route from the Karori tunnel to the Kelburne-Karori cable , tramway termifius will be advantageous to the borough; (2) That, in view of the fact that the Cable Company are prepared td offer a subsidy of ,£3OO per annum for five years if the line is constructed, together with a concession to the Karori public, and all through passengers using thoir line of Id faro each way (a 50 per cent, reduction on present rates); (3) That, in view of this and of the fact''that the great saving in car mileage over this route will mean decreased working expenses, this committee is of opinion that the interest and sinking funds over the now line would be so met as to save any increased rate; (4) That, althoughthe foregoing appears to the committee as a very solid argument in favour of the immediate construction of this route, in view of the difficulty that investigation has disclosed, the committee, in the meantime, are prepared to advocate the following procedure; (5) The setting-up of a committee to approach the Wellington City Council with tho object of discussing the scheme, and also to ask the city fo enter into negotiations with the Kelburne-Karori Cable Company for the purchase of their line, _and to approach the Kelburn o-Karori Company with a view to obtaining tho lowest price upon which they are prepared to discuss the soiling of their line to the city. Tho report was approved, and it was resolved that a special meeting of the council be held to discuss tho shorter route.
