THE NEW ELECTORAL BOUNDARIES

The Boundaries Commissions, after dealing with petitions in connection with their first definition of electoral boundaries, have now issued an amended report, The chief features of this report are given below. The statement available to the press does not define the alterations in detail, but there is sufficient information to give a clear idea of the concessions that have been made to tho petitioners. One of tho localities upon which attention had centred a good deal was To Aroha, the northern tourist resort, the inclusion of which in the Ohinemuri electorate meant: that the throe hotels in the town would bo deprived of their licenses. This, it was stated, would considerably affect tho prosperity of tho town as a tourist resort. The Commissioners wont into the matter fully, and, as will bo eceu below, the petition of tho To Aroha Council and Chamber of Commerce was complied with. To Aroha being retransferred to the Tauranga electorate. Apparently also the Katikati protest against inclusion in the Ohinemuri electorate has been practically successful, and here again a “ half-way” tourist hotel is reinstated in the /'licensed” district of Tauranga. In Mr Massey's electorate of Franklin, Pukekohe, which objected to transference to Raglan, is put back again into its former doctorate.

The name of tho Xtangitikei electorate, which has been considerably altered, has been changed to \Vaimarino, and the Hanawatu electorate assumes tho name of Kangitikei. The Commission found it impossible to re-establish tho townships along the Hanawutu line, as far north as Plimmorton, in the Otaki electorate, and in tho case of the Hntt concessions have been made to the extent of giving back to the Hutt that portion along the hillside of the railway lino towards Moonehiud that was taken into the Wellington Suburbs and Country electorate. In the South Island tho name of the Geraldine electorate lias been changed to that of Tomuka.

In their report the South Island Commissioners make one comment. They state that it was found that the boundaries of the Tuapcka and Taieri electorates had to bo so altered, as to render either name unsuitable, and so the commission decided to i ame the newly-de-fined distrnj; Otago Central, as better describing the same. It was also decided, as the Geraldine electorate had been altered so as to exclude Geraldine town and most of tho county, that the electorate should ho renamed “Temuka.” Tho North Island Commissioners have no comments to make.
