MAGISTRATE’S COURT

FRIDAY, AUGUST 4. (Before Mr W. G. Riddell, S.il.) MAINTENANCE. Sydney Sylvester was charged with ! having disobeyed a maintenance order, the arrears under which were ,£25 18s. It was stated that the police had been looking for the defendant for about ;welvo mouths and eventually arrested rim at Temuka. Accused stated that he knew nothing ihout the order, but later admitted havug received a notice to appear. lie was sentenced to two months’ imprisonment. An application by Harry Pearce for ho variation of an order so as to dispense with security was refused, but ho conditions of the order were varied :o provide for a bond of ,£45, with throe sureties of £ls each. One week was ;iven in which to find the money, on condition that the applicant reported limself daily to the police. Thomas Carroll was ordered to pay 5s per week towards the support of his Legitimate child, together with coninement expenses £6 6s, solicitor’s foe £2 2s, past maintenance las, and witicss’s expenses 10s Bd. Mr A. R. Atkinson appeared for complainant and Mr P. W. Jackson for defendant. BREACHES OP PROHIBITION ORDERS. Mary Joyce was sentenced to twentyone days’ imprisonment for drunkenness and for a breach of a prohibition order was convicted and discharged. Kate Sweeney pleaded guilty to drunkenness and a broach of a prohibition order and was remanded for sentence till to-day. BY-DAW CASES. Por driving a taxi-cab without being licensed Douglas Edward Muir was fined 10s, with costs 7s, or twenty-tour hours’ imprisonment Por permitting him to drive without a license George Pernandos was fined IDs, with costs 13s, and witnesses’ expenses 12s, or fortyeight hours’ imprisonment. Por permitting his chimney to get on fire Henry Lake was ordered to pay court costs 9s, with witness's expenses 4s, or twenty-four hours’ imprisonment. PAWNBROKER’S LICENSE. An application by William Harris for a pawnbroker’s license was granted.
