, Tho ancient ceremony of riding the bounds at Newbiggen, Northumberland, was followed by the "dnnting” of two new freeholders at tho historical “denting” etono on the moor. For tho first time in living memory one of the recruits was a lady. They were seized by tho stalwart men and carried face uppermost to tho stone, , and "dented” —gently struck against the stone —three times. Tho ordeal is peculiar, and not dignified. Subsequently the recruits, according to custom, scattered tboir bounty among an interested and cheering crowd of onlookers.
