LAWN TENNIS

THIS YEAR'S Cm\iMPIONISiHIPS. A proposal will bo submitted at tbe quarterly meeting of the New Zealand Lawn Tennis Association on the 28tb inst. suggesting that arrangements should be made, if possible, whereby this year's New Zealand lawn tennis championship should be played under altered conditions owing to the holding of the Baris Cup in New Zealand this year. It is proposed that the Davis Cup should he played on Tuesday,. Thursday and Saturday, December 26th, 2Sth and 30th, and that the New Zealand championships shoxild be played on the intervening days; that the four players remaining in the New Zealand championship on the third day and the four Davis Oux> players shall then play off for the Dominion championship on Monday, New Year's Day, and the day following, if necessary. As the emergencies for tho Davis Cup teams and many leading Australian players will bo present on this great occasion, the event. promises to bo one of unequalled merit so far as New Zealand is concerned. MOTIONS BY CANTERBURY. The Canterbury Association will move: — That in view of the decision of the Australasian Lawn Tennis Association that tho Davis Cup contest bo played before tho New Zealand championship meeting instead of afterwards, as proposed, the New Zealand Lawn Tennis Association proceed to reconsider tho site for the New Zealand championships on the ground that the proposed sequence of matches in tho same place will militate against the success of the New Zealand championship and mako it advisable that the Davis Cup and tho New Zealand championships be played in different cities; and further on the grounds: TUat the Davis Cup contest will f6r tho time, being exhaust tne interest in tennis in the centre in which it is held. That, therefore, if tho New Zealand championships are held immediately after tho cup contest and in tho same centre very little interest will he taken in them and there is likely to be only a poor attendance of tho public. That if the New Zealand championships arc played after the cup contest, but in another centre, and, as is probable, some of the cup competitors take part in the matches, a large number of those interested in tennis who were unable to attend the cup contest will havo an opportunity of seeing some of the world's leading exponents of the game play; a fact which must be of benefit to tennis in New Zealand.

That it has been customary to hold a provincial championship ana handicap tournament immediately after the conclusion of the New Zealand championships and in the same centre. If, however, the Davis Cup contest and the New Zealand championships aro held in the same centre it will be impossible to hold snch a provincial meeting' with any chance of success.
