SOUTHWARD HO!

TERRA NOVA’S MISSION

MULES AND DOGS FOR. THE ANTARCTIC. PRESS ASSOCIATION. CHRISTCHURCH. August 3. In view' of the departure of the British Antarctic expedition's ship, the Terra Nova, for Captain Scott's base towards the end of the year, matters connected with the additional animals to be convoyed to Antarctica are receiving attention at present. Mr J. J. Kinsey has arranged for a further supply of Siberian dogs and bas obtained them from Nicolaejeffsk, through a Vladivostock firm. Tho dogs will bo shipped to Kobe, Japan, where they will be transhipped to one of tho steamers of tho E. and A. line to Sydney, from whence they will be again transhipped to Lyttelton, where it is expected they will arrive somewhere about .the end of October.

In their native country the dogs are foci exclusively on '‘woyecala’* (dried fish) and have not been accustomed to any other kind of food. As it will be impossible to feed them on dried lish in the Antarctic regions, Mr Kinsey is making arrangements for an alteration in their diet upon their arrival in Japan, and if Spratt's dog biscuits are obtain-able-there they wadi'be fed on them and will thus become accustomed to the diet that will ho provided for them when with tlie expedition. Regarding the mules from India to be sent to Antarctic, Mr Kinsey has been informed that the animals have been selected and are ready for shipment about the present time from Calcutta by the Union Company's steamer Aparima. Tho mules, which are similar to those used for transport purposes' in Thibet, have been trained, and it is hoped that as tho result of this training they will pull unitedly when worked by the members of tho expedition. As "the Indian muio is of a different temperament from tiio Siberian pony, which is so erratic, it is expected that belter work will bo got out of the former. As is being done with the Siberian dogs, the Indian mules are being accustomed to the food that will be available for them in the Antarctic regions.
