Mark Webb stated in a lecture at London that modern clothing retained many features of great antiquity. “The hat-band can be traced back as far as tho sixth dynasty in JBgypt," ho said. “The fringes which are still left at tho ends of shawls and towels, although serving no purpose to-day. are reminiscent of tho ancient presses, when it was necessary to leave a fringe to prevent tho end from fraying."
