The Victorian Yacht Squadron has intimated its intention to challenge for the Sayonara Cup. The race will probably bo sailed in January or February next.

There have been several contests for this trophy, which is the - American. Cup of Australia. Sayonara. a cutter designed by the famous Scottish marine artist. File, some years ago, successfully defended the cup on behalf of Victoria for some seasons. Last year she was beaten on time allowance by a Sydney yacht, but there W3<3 a dispute as to whether the latter, which was a now boat built to the metre nue. was entitled to any such allowance. Th© point at issue was referred to the Eng, lish authorities, who ruled in favour of the Sydney challenger, much to the disappointment of the Victorian yachtsmen, A condition of the race is that the challenger has to be sailed to the port where the race is hela. Sayonara is a fine cruiser, but being some fifteen years old w-.rather odt of date, so it is probable a new challenger will bo built. It seems likely that the Sydney people will depend upon Awantd to defend the cup, although it is possible a series of tests may bo held to decide whether she is really a. faetcr cutter than the Auckland-budt Eawhltu The former, being specially built to the new rule, has a better record, ns Eawhitt a Logan-built boat which sailed across from Auckland to Sydney about four years ago, is badly penalised by the measurement rule now obtaining. The coming contest will take place m Port Jackson, one race being over the Manly course and a second over a triangular course outsidf the Heads.
