AMATEUR ATHLETICS

' question of new RUXES. DISCUSSION BY THE WELLINGTON CENTRE. A mcetin g of the Wellington Centro of the New' Zealand Amateur Athletic Association was held last evening, Mr It. W. MoVillv presiding. Mr F. Foss brought up the question of i)ho consideration of the rules of the New* Zealand council. He contended that members did not have proper time to consider the new* rules. The business of the council should be. conducted, in a businesslike manner. -In the revised rules there was absolutely no ■mention of the crosscountry championships, or oven as to what should constitute a quorum at a meeting. The rules as revised had been signed by a gentleman who was not a member of tyie council. Thor© was a clique on the council. .Mr W. F. Larkin said that Mr Foss had raised to himself a certain amount of opposition, wßiicli was to bo regretted. Personally, ho' was not convinced that the clique mentioned was responsible-for the delay in printing tho rules. During his connection with the council \he had alwavs found .that tho members - tried ,fc> do their best in the interest of athletics. For a member to say that there was a clique on the council did not show that ho was working fairly with lus fellow-members. . In reply to questions Mr Foss said ijaat tho rules had been sent to a meeting, but copies had not been sent along with ; them—at least, he had not received a copy. Tho rules had never come up before the council for confirmaticu, except at an informal meeting. As member's had not seen‘them they had not received proper consideration. Delegates .wishing to bring up'amendments had no opportunity of doing so. He considered I(hat certain, suggestions of his should have had consideration. . The chairman said that* hod he been a = Wellington delegate on the council,, .no certainly would have protested against tli« rules being confirmed if fie had not lirtd sufficient time to, consider tthem. The AVeWington. contra should approve of Mr Ross’s action in not assenting to tho confirmation of the revised mice at the meeting of -the council. ' Mr T. W. Leslie moved, That the AA’ellmgton. centre is strongly of opinion that. the council of the N.Z.A.A.A. has not given full consideration to the new rules; has treated this centres delegate wiilh discourtesy in refusing to hear the. amendments brought forward by him; and lias.not proceeded in a proper and constitutional manner; and we strongly urge upon the council the necessity of considering all suggestions without delay, so that the rules may bo properly passed and printed.” , Tho chairman said that. if such a resolution were passed the centre would bo' traversing tho actions of the council without /having a proper knowledge of Mr Beavam. seconded the resolution. On the chairman’s suggestion Mr Xislxo amended his resolution as follows: —. That this centre lias ©very oonfid-onco in its delegates, and. is convinced that they acted in tho best interests of sport, and urges' tho council to give Mr Foss an opportunity of bringing forward the amendments already mentioned by him before tho new -rules are printed, _bein.g of opinion ijhafc by so doing the best interests of amateur sport u ill bo advanced/' . . Tho amendment was earned.
