Tiie engagement is announced of Mr Sydney Jacobs, son of Mr N. Jacobs, Thorndon quay, and we!! known in Wellington cricketing circles, to Miss Ailsey Afanoy, only daughter of Mr A. Manoy, of Alotucka.

Last Alonday night “ our girls’ ’’ branch of the Victoria League held their usual fortnightly meeting, at which Airs Corliss presided. Miss Kano read a very interesting paper on “ Modern Roman History.” The members also read short sketches on some of the great men in Roman history.

• The Brooklyn harriers have issued invitations for their second animal dance, wliich will take place in the New' Century Hall, Kent terrace, on Wednesday, 'August 9th, at 8 o’clock. Mr E. A. Shaw and Air J. T. Don are the joint secretaries.

The Pioneer Club has issued invitations for an “at home,” to be held next Tuesday afternoon at 2.30, to meet the club’s warden, her Excellency Lady Islington.

Miss Grace Kennedy will give a pupils’ concert next Saturday evening in St. Andrew’s schoolroom, AVollington terrace. A most attractive programme has been arranged.

A pretty wedding took place yesterday at St. Andrew’s Church, Palmerston North; the contracting parties being Mr Ernest Pearce, son of Mr Pearce, of AVellington, and Miss Matilda Alillar, daughter of Mr James Alillar, of Palmerston North. The Rev. A. Doull, ALA., officiated. The bride was attired in creme Fox’s serge costume with revers of silk ottoman and black mount and swathed toque of creme panne. Her three sisters — Alisses Ivy, Ellen, and Dorothy Millar —attended her as bridesmaids, all of whom .wore braided Shantung robes. Aliss Ivy Alillar wore also a black hat with lancer plumes, and Misses Ellen and Dorothy black hats with floral effects. The bridegroom was attended by Messrs Andrew and Kenneth Alillar and Henry Paltridge. The bridegroom’s present to the bride was a pendant set with pearls and peridotes. The bridal party left by motor-car for Auckland, the bride’s travelling dress being a Norfolk tailor-made costume, saxe blue bat with feathers, and set of black seal furs.
