SUMNER-HEATHCOTE CANAL

PUESS ASSOCIATION. CHRISTCHURCH. August 2. At last month’s meeting of the Lyttelton Harbour Board the late Mr T. E. Taylor gave notice of motion to the effect that the commercial aspect of the proposed Sumner-Heathcote canal bo investigated and reported on by two or more competent New Zeaalnd harbour authozdties. At to-day’s meeting, after discussion, and on tho suggestion of the chairman, it was aecided to consider the following proposai at the next meeting of the board:— “As a matter of policy, and out of respect to tho memory of our late colleague, Mr T. E. Taylor, this board resolves as aoUows: (1) That a commission be set up to investigate and report on tho soundness or otherwise of the finding in the majority and minority reports of the special committee appointed to investigate and report on the financial aspect . of a canal to Hoathcote, and other propositions for harbour extensions; (2) that the commission have power to take evidence and call for all documents in the possession of the board relating to .the canal scheme; (3) that the cost of such further investigation he paid by the board, and the commissioners’, or a majority of such commissioners', reports be final; (4) that the ficottemen constituting such commission be—(left blank)—and that in case anv of them be unable to act the chairman, with Messrs Dougall and Lanrenson, have power to appoint substitutes."
