PROFESSIONAL MUSICIANS.

At* the annual meeting of tho Wellington Society of Professional Musicians, the following officers were elected,: —President, Mr Laurence F. Watkins; vice-presidents. Miss Beatrice Richmond and Mr Horace Hunt; hon. secretory, Mr Loo. Buckeridge; hon. treasurer. Miss Gladys Watkins; councai, Messers Maughan Barnett and Robert Parker (both past presidents), Missos Phoebe Parsons, Grace Kennedy, Mowatt, and Mr P. R. Johnstone. The report hoped that members would evince a more lively interest in what should be one of the society's most important functions—the bringing together of members of the' musical profession for social intercourse, providing opportunities of hearing recognised masterpieces, and of new and unknown works. Six new members had joined during the year, and eight had left. VThe membership now stood at thirty-three. The council had decided not to favour amalgamation with otber societies under the Incorporated Societies Act, partly because no advantage was to be gained, and also on account of the unsatisfactory result of the last conference. The council regretted that a Competitions Society, had been formed in Wellington, as it would have a harmful effect on music and conduce to an undesirable craving for public > adulation and appearance before the footlights.
