MAORI FOOTBALL TEAM

SOMETHING ABOUT THE PLAYERS. FBOII OUE OWN COEBESPONDENT MASTERTON, August 1. Tho New Zealand Maori football team, which is to play 7 Wairarapa at Carterton on Thursday, has arrived in Masterton from the north. The team contains some of the best players in New Zealand, including Kaipara (Poverty Bay), a North Island representative; Tiki, a smart half from Canterbury; Takarangi, a North Island representative; Rongo, five-eighth of Otago University team (champion of Otago); Ryiaud, of .Gisborne; Rogers, of Rotorua; Moana Paratenq, . formerly of Mastertou (and half-brother of Cunningham, the famous All Black forward), whom Mr Farata, manager of tho team, considers will eventually develop into the finest lock in New Zealand; Burnett, of Dunedin; Makahuri, of Hawke’s Bay; Cochrane, of Wairoa; Dawson, of Hawke’s Bay; Dansey, of Otago University, and an Otago representative; Sellars and Hall, Auckland representatives; and Hughes, a Manawatu representative. Hall, Sellars, Hughes and Dansey have not yet joined the team, but it is expected that Hughes and Sellars will arrive in time to play against Wairarapa. The average weight of the forwards is 14st 21b, and of the backs list 71b. Mr Farata states tliat though tho match with Wairarapa is to be played at Carterton, bis team will stay in Masterton, as they prefer this town. He, together with other members of the combination, was somewhat that it had been decided to play the match at Carterton instead of Masterton. Mr Farata further stated that there were about .3000 Maoris who played football in New Zealand to-day. ' A . movement was on foot to. form a Maori Sports Association, which would embrace all amateur sports, and a conference of Maoris would be held shortly for this purpose. Probably a Rugby competition among Maori provincial teams on the lines of tho Ranfuriy Shield would also be instituted. ASSOCIATION TODAY’S MATCH. Hearts A v. Hearts B, Basin Reserve. Times.”) Sir,—As one interested in the Boys’ League of Association football, and having taken a great interest ‘ in their matches during.this season, I was greatly surprised to see in last Saturday’s match on the Basin Reserve —Brooklyn v. Y.M.C.A. fifthclass match—plaj'ors in the Brooklyn team who X have seen playing with other teams all through the present season. One has played for tho Congregational fourthclass team all the season, until his team was defeated in tho Charity Cup match the previous Saturday. Another played fourth class all tho season for the South Wellington team; his team was also defeated and put out of the contest tho previous Saturday. Now, sir, I think it is meet unfair and iinsnortsmanliko that a team should bo allowed to draw on players who f have signed on, and p Joyed for other clubs, i during the season. Surely such a state I of affairs is not allowed by the manage-1 meat committee. It is v not fair to mem-1

tors of the Brooklyn team, who are pushed oat to make room for better players from other clubs; neither is it sportsmanlike or justice to the teams who have yet. to meet the Brooklyn team. I trust the management committee will put a sop to this unfair practice and allow a team to win a competition on its own merits.—l am, etc., SPORT. August Ist.
