Athletic, Park, No, 2; D, A. Taylor. MANAWATU AND HOROWHENUA. Previous to tho representative match Horowhcnua v. Manawatu, at Palmerston North on, Saturday, a meeting of tho two unions was heldA Manawatu representative asked why it was that tho last report of the meeting of the Horowhcnua Rugby Union was published. There was, he said, no necessity for any member of that union to say that he would "put his foot down." The arrangements for the amalgamation of the two unions for representative purposes were going on amicably, and there hsd been nothing to take exception to on the part of Manawatu. Ho complained that Mr AVhibley, of Foxton, had asked by what authority Manawatu had arranged the date for the match with Taranaki. Mr Burge, secretary of tho Horowhonua Union, stated that tho meetings of his union were open to tho press, who always gave a detailed and accurate report of the proceedings. It was stated at the meeting alluded to that Manawatu might get a "little ahead" of Horowhcnua if Horowhcnua did not keep its oyes open, and lie had said that; so far as he was concerned, lie would watch matters generally and the interests of his union in particular. So far as the Taranaki match was concerned ho had told Mr Whibley that the match .was an annual fixture between Manawatu and Taranaki, and that it-had been mutually arranged that the fixture should, this year, bo played by tlio amalgamated team. It was a matter of courtesy on the part of Manawatu to allow the match t"> bo played. Mr AYhibley said that tho report of his remarks was a correct one.

Tho Manawatu representatives urged that an error of judgment had been ccramitted, and that tho report, which appeared in the "New Zealand Times" and other papsrs, had gone "all over tho country," giving the impression that tho unions wero at loggerheads. Regret was also expressed that one member of the union had said he would "put his foot dc.wn " Air Procter 'chairman of tho Horowheuua Union): X said we would not play Hawke’s Bay and AVanganui as an amalgamated union. Mr McKenzie, secretary of the amalgamated committee, said he was sure both unions would work amicably in tho future. (General applause.) Mr Gibbons was then elected chairman of tho committee, and Mr R. Smith (Horowhenua) and ‘Mr McWiflllam (Manawatu) selectors. CANTERBURY REPRESENTATIVES. PRESS ASSOCIATION. . CHRISTCHURCH, July 31.
