The Appeal Coirrt has confirmed tho sentence on Lieutenant Arnold, of tw-olvo years’ impirisonmont for cruelty to the Congo, narirves. A recent cable message stated that natives testified that a large batch, of prisoners was. suddenly . sent to Noaii prison. When they lay down at night they wore literally piled one on another. Torriblp struggles took place for the best places. Bjvtho mossing thirty-three of, them were dead.
The sentence which hasiheen confirmed was imposed by a court at Moboka in 1909. Lieutenant Arnold’s defence'was that his actions were justified by circumstances, as the country was ;in open revolt. The matter was referred to higher courts, and the lonsr scries >ot appeals has only just concluded.
