COMPANIES PENALISED

FAILING TO PROVIDE EETOENS. Tho Eegistrar of Companies proceeded against the following firms in trie Hagisf (rate's Court yesterday for having failed to make the returns required by the Companies Act; —The ■ Eakaunui Hall Company, Ltd., Newbould Patents Ltd., New Zealand Fruit and Produce Company, Ltd, North Island , Brewery Company, Patea Shipping Company, and Nelson, Moate and Co. In. the three last mentioned cases a defence has been, filed, and the hearing was adjourned for a week, Mr T. Neave, who appeared for the Registrar, explained that in the first case, in which the defendants pleaded guilty, the points at issue were much tho same as in the defended oases and he asked that his Worship adjourn it till after argument in the latter had. been heard. The company had sent in a list which was not in compliance with tho statute. After formal evidence as to the breach had been given, his Worship reserved judgment. In the cose of tho Newbould Patents, Ltd, Mr Neave explained that it was merely a technical breach and he asked for a nominal penalty. Defendants were fined 10s, with costs 7s, and solicitor's fee XI Is. In the case of the New Zealand Frnit and Produce Company, Ltd, the return had been sent in too late. The meeting of shareholders on which it was based was held on December 28th instead of on or before December 17th as provided by the Act. A fine of 10s, with costs 7s, and solicitor's foe XX Is was imposed.
