WELLINGTON MARKETS

< FRUIT AND PRODUCE. The quantity of apples coming forward each week from local orchards is getting smaller, ami there hare been practically no supplies of pears available from New Zealand growers. In fact the volume of apples is so small now that reliance has really to bo placed on shipments of Tas-manian-grown to cater foe the bulk of the demand. This means, of course, that with a dearth in Hobart supplies, a stronger and higher market will rule for any Now Zealand, apples available. Only a moderate total arrived yesterday from Tasmania, and • a percentage of the fruit wag in somewhat poor order. For sound fruit, both apples and pears, the demand was satisfactory. Citrus fruits from Sydney faced a slightly fluctuating market, but in practically every instance values touched a high range. Transhipments of Cook Island fruits are due via Auckland on Tuesday, and a good outlet is anticipated for orange© and bananas. Apples, choice local dessert 8s to 9s, prime 7e to 7 a 6d, cookers, prime favourites 7a to Ba, good Ss 6d to 6s 6d; pears, choice dessert ils to 11s 6d half-case, prime 9s 6d to'los 6d, stowing 5s 6d to 7s; tree tomatoes 3a to 4s half-caeo, hothouse tomatoes, choice .largo 9d to Is lb, prime 5d to 7d. POTATOES AND ONIONS. The anticipated advance in the potato market has assumed shape during the past few days. Whereas this line was going bogging last week at a value of 62b 6d to 65a per ton f.0.b., to-day they are quoted at up to 75s for prime table, and offerings are not any too free at that figure. Tho wet weather doubtless has interfered with supplies coining forward; at tho same time the quick decline of three ■weeks bock was in some quarters not expected to exist for any length of time. Quite apart, however, from any influence tho weather may have had, it would appear to be a question .of another movement upwards rather than in the reverse direction. Seed varieties are in good demand at £8 per ton f.o.b. south for Early Rose and Beauty of Hebron; British Queen and Princess Victoria rule at £5 10s to £6, with Up-to-datcs at 85s. Tho Melbourne market for onions is quiet at 80s f.o.b. Sydney operators came on that market with a great rush about ten days ago. with the result that tho market advanced to 97s 6d f.o.b. Melbourne, Tho rise, however, proved to bq too rapid, and the price is now back to about 80s f.o.b. It is to bo expected that . as the winter advances tho market will, as is usually the cose, rise iu price. Canterbury onions are now off the market for tho season. OTHER VEGETABLES. A strong inquiry continues to exist in tho local markets for practically every line of vegetables, more notably in the: case of cauliflowers, cabbages and pumpkins. Cabbages have been in far heavier supply, however, bat tho demand remains.satisfactory.
