Key move;—Q to B -1. ❖❖❖ Local Clubs. Wellington Club. But little progress has been made with the section-play in tho annual “Petherick” tournament, owing mainly to the very unseasonable weather of the past week. Two players have qualified in Section A for the "final six," viz., Mr j Carman with 7 wins 1 loss, and Mr Eouhy with 7 wins 2 losses. Mr Car-1 man has to meet Mr Barnes but this j game cannot affect the finals. If Mr Hicks can win his one outstanding game I his tally would be G—3, and ho would | have to play off with Mr Arden for the right ’of competing in the finals. In Section B Mr Gyles (senior) qualifies easily with an unbeaten record of 7—o. Play in this section is very backward and it is impossible to say who will bo the other two to qualify from this division. Working Hen’s Club. In the third round of this club’s annual handicap tourney the results were as follows;—Barnes won from Kelling, { J. Eeid from Eton, Dalrymplo from I Coulter, C. Eeid from Belt, and Gandy I from •Koster. Mr Greig’s withdrawal | gave J. Wilson a bye. Tho fixtures, j Larking v. Bryant and Wild v. Burgess, | aro outstanding. In his half-yearly re- j port to the general committee on the chess and draughts section the lion, secretary briefly summarises the past months as follows; —"The annual handicap tourneys are in full swing with very satisfactory entries, and a new feature in tho shape of ‘ladder’ matches is being introduced. Mr C. Erickson has tho honour of winning the first tournament for tho draughts championship of tho club. Tlxe chess team camo third in the recent handicap teams tournament of the Wellington Chess League, and later on won its match against tho Wairarapa 'reps’ who toured Wellington in Coronation AVeck. Tho good work of former years 1 is being well maintained, and the outlook is of tho best.” Prom which it would appear that the AVorking Men’s Club has as much cause as ever to be proud of its chess and draughts section. South Wellington Club. Last-week’s play saw Mr AV el ton’s first reverse, Mr Perrott proving too strong at the scheduled odds. Messrs Welton, Hicks and B. B. Allen aro now leading i jointly, each having lost only one of his | first five games. Messrs Purchas and i Harper are "in close attendance” and any one of those five players may ultimately win the club trophy for i9IU2, Kilbirnie Club. The best scores in this club’s handicap tourney are as follows: —Purchas and S. Gyles each 7 wins 1 loss, H. A. Ward 7—2. Banks 5 —3 and Peatonby 3—2. ono or two players are dropping out, and as there are only a few more rounds to bo played the results of tho club’s “maiden tourney" should bo available at an early date. DRAUGHTS. Working Men’s Club Handicap Draughts Tourney. Tho following are the scores to Wednesday last, in the Working Men’s Club Draughts Tourney:— '

Mr Leonard has retired. Tho above tally shows that the tournament is now in full swing. Mr McPherson is leading with 101 points, the final, however, will not be decided for some time to como vet, several rounds of tho! tournament still having to bo played. and it is hard to say who will win the tourney at the present stage. It is pleasing to notice the improved form thi* your of some cl ilu* competitors, notably Mosrors S. Burgess, \\\ Colville and J. Orr, while among tho older

“crocks'’ of the club there is every indication of a hard tussle. The drawings of the fifth and sixth rounds are as follows: Filth Found.— M«srs Larking v. Erickson, Burgess v. J. Feid. Coulter v. Wilson. C. Feid v. Hands, W Coivilio v. I‘. McPherson, J. On- v. Kosler, Harris v. McArthur, and Wright v. Bryant. Messrs Orr and Kos.ter liave piay.-d their games the tally being Orr 2.5 Hester U.
