Lacrosse

(By “Point.") To-day “the inaudible and noiseless foot of Time” kicks , tho last goal in the Proud Cup competition of 1911. The Great Flier—whom we might aptly term, our premier aviator —appears to have) been out after records this season. X can scarcely realise that the prescribed fonr rounds of the Cup competition havo been played. Things have either run' smoothly with the game or the Old, Bounder has got a ’ready” on to us—which is hardly likely in those days of gtatuitous almanacks and half-dollar c h ronome tors. Well, boys, if Timo says "Time’s up” tho game's up for another year at least, H© of tho Scythe and Hour-Glass is our most exacting referee. There’s no questioning his decision; and when he orders you off tho field you've got to go. It'a no use your attempting to argue the point; it’s no use your threatening to see him after tho game, because even if it were possible for you to wait unti, ho had a minute or two to spare you'll; bo sadly out of condition. Besides you. couldn't “come back/' no matter how hard you tried. But X am forgetting that “Time is money," and although there is certainly not an abundance of the latter these times, I will not endanger tho possibility of my picking N up a share of what little there is lying around by slinging ink about in this fashion. I sincerely hope that notwithstanding tho fact of the closure being applied to onr Cup competition, interest in the game will not bo allowed to flag. . There is no reason why a few entertaining matches should not be arranged for the remaining days of tho season., A very acceptable game would be one between tho Cup holders, Kelburne, and a team selected from Capitol, Columbia, and ■Wellington. Kelburne is a very strong combination, but I should like to see tho men in blue perform against such capable - lacrosseura as O’Boary, Montgomery, Faina, Ryder, Grant, Bohan, Carver. Loydpn, Forbes, Jant keT>Aloran, and Of course the”selection of a team to include ail the players I have mentioned would necessitate several of them playing out of their accustomed places. Nevertheless the game would prove interesting. There is, too, the matter of tho projected trip to Christchurch. I learn from a member of tho Kelburne Club, who recently visited the Cathedral City, that the game is becoming a popular one there. My informer witnessed” a match between two Christchurch teams and, while admitting that tho play was not of a high standard, was favourably impressed by tho enthusiasm displayed. • I strongly advocate the selection of a good team to go South at an early.date, and would like to sec several of our promising young players included, -.Bohan (Wellington), Jordan,, Canty, and Loughnan (Kelburne), Grant (Columbia), and Hubbard (Capitol) are men who can bo relied upon to give good accounts of themselves. Lot the remainder of the team be composed of older players. I am sure lovers of the game* will spar© no effort to further its interests in the South. lam led to understand that an attempt will shortly bo made to arouse some enthusiasm in Dunedin. When we havo Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin —the four centres—working away merrily it will be time for the New Zealand Lacrosse Association to “get busy."

Tho match between Columbia and Capitol, at tho Basin Reserve, last Saturday, was a very poor exhibition of lacrosse. Neither team appeared to be capable of picking up the ball, consequently play was of an indifferent order. Fama was not up to standard, and Grant could make nothing of Moran, who dogged the Columbian's footsteps from start of finish. Beydon has not evidently recovered from the severe. shaking ho

received at Duppa street several weeks ago. Hubbard, Forbes, f.fanlkc, and Boyd showed up well for Capitol, while Columbia’s best man was tho redoubtable O’Leary. The result, 8 goals to -I, in Capitol’s favour may bo taken as a fair idea of the play. Next season, I believe, two ladies clubs may bo soon in Wellington, I have every confidt?r.c© in the success of those if some inducemenfc.be given the girls to play up. No doubt a gallant willjio found who. in addition to ingratiating himself with the lair sex, will render yeoman service to the game by presenting a suitable trophy for competition amongst the ladies. Talk is cheap those days, but what we really want is hard work. I don’t see tho force of men lazing round and lalk--1 ing lacrosse—let them get a move on and do something for tho good of the game. I have received no news of the Duppo Street match between ICelburne and Wellington. Tho City team has experienced hard times this season, and unless something is done to bring about a revival of enthusiasm within its ranks 1 am afraid it will fare very badly next season At a meeting of the Wellington Lacrosse Association, held last week. Air A. G. Anderson was unanimously elected hon. secretary of the association. The rules of the game of Lacrosse are to bo issued shortly, in book form, by tho Now Zealand governing body. To-day’s match at Duppa Street ought to attract a large number of enthusiasts. Kelburne, tho Cup holders, meet Columbia in tho last match of tho Cup competition, and although a victory for the latter will not affect the destination of the pot. the blacks would welcome a win if onlv for the satisfaction of knowing that they had given the bines a run for their money, I expect to see many old familiar faces on tho line to-day to assist in ringing down tho curtain on the Proud Cup’s- second season. To-day’s. Matches. Kelburne v. Columbia, Duppa Street, Air A, G. Anderson. Capitol v. Wellington, Basin Reserve, Mr P, J. McGovern.
