PHILOSOPHICAL SOCIETY
A number of interesting topics were dealt with at a meeting of the Wellington Philosophical Society, which was held at the Dominion Museum last night. Mr G. V. Hudson presided. Mr A. Hamilton, director of the Museum, exhibited a number of recent acquisitions to tho Museum, and described their most interesting features There were two collections of moths. One came from Brisbane in exchange* for Now Zealand specimens, and the other from Aru Island, on the south-west coast of New Guinea. Mr Hamilton re marked that both were very interesting as coming from districts not hitherto represented in New Zealand museums. He added that the collection of lepidop, tera now in the Dominion Museum was growing fast and promised very shortly to bo fully representative and of much value to students.
A vibration galvanometer was to have been exhibited and explained by Professor Baby of Victoria College, who however, was unable to attend. The demonstration was carried out by his first assistant. Mr B. W. Holmes, Engineer-in-chief of the Public Works Department, gave a lecture on the Federal capital territory. He illustrated his remarks by means of plans, views, and a relief model of tho locality in which AustraHa's capital city is to be built. The highly technical subject of “Tho Higher Fatty Acids” was dealt with by Professor Easterfield and Miss C. M. Taylor. Mr C. E. Adams submitted some notes on the tidal records taken at Wellington, and spoke of the work done in this connection. All the sneakers were heartily thanked for the information given by them.
