The local markets are relying practically upon supplies of applies now to meet the demand for fruit in the interim of arrivals of oversea shipments of other varieiims ot 'fruit Despite this, however, an excellent inquiry is resulting for apples of both cooking and dessert sorts, values during the past few days having advanced. The usual weekly shipment of New South Wales fruits in the shape of mandarine, oranges, lemons, passions, and pineapples Is due to-day, but as only a small quantity is -arriving the market should keep at a satisfactory level. Island oranges are still in fair supply from the previous shipments, but aa no further quantities are due until the 20th instant, together with bananas, no doubt there will bo a stronger inquiry before that date. The duty on imported apples and pears will bo reduced to a half-penny, per lb on Friday, but it is reported that only a moderate quantity of these fruits is due on Friday, Tasmanian shippers apparently finding a better outlet in their own market to shipping to this centre to a large extent. Apples, choice coloured dessert 10s to 11s ease, prime 8s to 9s, others 6s 6d to 7s 6d;; cooking, prime favourites 6s 6d to 7s 6d case, prime ordinary 5s 6d to -6s, others 4s 6d to &3 ; tree tomatoes, 3s 6d to 4a 6d box; pears, choice dessert 13s to 16a oasi*. prime l 9s to 12s, stowing 6s to 8s; lemons, 5s 6d to 6s 6d case. POTATOES AND ONIONS. * Heavy supplies of table potatoes, comprising mostly Up-to-dates, are offering in the South Island at tho lower price which set in last week. Heavy operations have been indulged in by merchants, and no doubt there will be a surfeit of supplies here; at the same time the markets are not looked upon to remain for any length of time at the lower level, as it is understood that there is no large surplus of tubers in the Dominion. Onions are getting very scarce in Canterbury, and there will be practically none available ore long. Victorian are arriving each week, and showing bettor quality generally than southern. Potatoes, prime £4 15s to £5 10a per ton, inferior 4s to 5s sack; onions, £5 5s to £o 10s ton. OTHER VEGETABLES. Cauliflowers, cabbages, pumpkins, and parenij>s still continue in heavy demand, with high price* ruling. Cauliflowers, choice 15s to 203 sack (with higher rates ruling occasionally), prime 9s to Us. inferior 5s to Bscabbages, choice j 11s to 13s sack, prime 8s to IQs, inferior (4s to bs; parsnips, 5a to 6s sack, swedes 30a to 40s ton; artichokes, 4s to 63 half | sack; French beans, 12« to 14s half sock; broad beaus. 7s to 9s half sack; marrows, \4s 6d to 6s sack; spinach, 5a Gd to 4s case, turnip©, 4« to 5s sack; carrots, 4j to 6d sack; beetroot, 4s Gd to 5b sack; pumpkins, S 3 to 7s sack.
