DROWNED IN HARBOUR
FATE! OF PASSENGER BY THE CORINTHIC. At about ten o’clock last night two Greek seamen belonging to tho steamer Feliciana, while proceeding along tho breaatwork opposite the Ferry Wharf, wore attracted by the cries of a man who .was struggling in the harbour. They raised the cry of “man overboard” and immediately looked, about for a boat. Two seamen on tho ferry steamer Admiral. D. Williams and John Hellsten. were aroused, and with the assistance of the Greeks lowered a boat and picked np tho man. who was lifted on board the steamer Aluritai, lying at the Ferry Wharf. Dr C. Pentreath, of Christchurch, who is going Home on the Otaki, was coming ashore in a tender at the time, and ho was quickly on tho scene. For nearly an hour he, and Dr Pigeon, who was summoned by telephone from tho wharf, endeavoured to restore animation, but their efforts proved unavailing. Deceased was fully clothed, and had on a heavy overcoat, which probably prevented him from swimming. _ Papers found in his clothing showed that his name was Robert Humphreys, a third-class passenger who arrived from England by the Corinthic yesterday morning. Tho paasenger-list of tho vessel shews that ho had booked to Auckland. Ho had in his possession an order form issued by Levin and Co., entitling him to book a second-class ticket to Taumarnimi. There was also a telegram from Mauunui, King Country, dated July 10th, and signed “ Kush ton,” stating:—“Book Taumarunui. Como morning train Manunni.” There was also a letter in his clothing written from Manunui on Juno 13th, giving him instructions how to reach that place, and signed “ Your loving son and brother, Charles and. Hily." Deceased was a well-bnilt man, who appeared to be about thirty-five years of age. Tho body was removed to tho morgue, where an inquest will be held tol4ay.
