A BIG LANDSLIDE SHEEP MORTALITY IN THE AVAIKARAPA. TP. Oil OL'E OWN CORRESPONDENT. MASTERTON. July 10. _ Heavy rain has fallen throughout IVairarapa for tho past fifteen hours, and the rivers arc all in high Hood. Hundreds of acres of low-lying country are under water, and as a result of the cold weather there is a heavy mortality among young sheep. A big landslip occurred on the Alfrcd-ton-Mastcrtou road this morning, blocking tho traffic. Reports from other parts of the district aro to. tho effect that slips have • occurred which will cause suspension of vehicular tratlic. Tho rain is the heaviest experienced this winter, and when itho snow on the ranges melts serious floods will probably follow. MANAWATU RIVER RISING. PALMERSTON NORTH, July 10. During the twenty-four hours from 9 a.m, yesterday tho rainfall in Palmerston was within a few points of two inches. Many of the low-lying parts of the district are inundated, and ail the creeks in the vicinity of the town are flooded. Tho Manawatu river is bankhigh to-night and is still rising fast. LEVIN PARTIALLY FLOODED. LEVIN, July 10. Phenomenally heavy rain fell last night, tho total for tho twenty-four hours being well over two inches. The low-lying portions of tho town are flooded with surface water. HEAVY FALL AT WANGANUI. WANGANUI, July 10. Heavy rain fell steadily from early this morning till about 3 o’clock this afternoon. The river is running high, but no damage has been done. Throughout Sunday night and all day yesterday till a late hour last night there was a continuous fall of rain at Wellington. Yesterday morning the wind veered from the north-west to the south and at times blow fresh. The Hutt river last evening had risen six feet.
