MORAL JONES CASE
FROir OUB OWN CORRESPONDENT. LONDON, June 2. Dr. Findlay Ims referred to his solicitors an article which London “Truth” published recently, violently attacking? the New Zealand Government for not compensating ~M okau” Jones, and . suggesting that the Government had taken no action because Dr, Findlay, a member of tho Cabinet, was also a partner in a firm of solicitors which was concerned in the Mokau case. Dr. Findlay informed me this morning * that his solicitors’ letter would appear in too next issue of “Truth,” and ho thought an action for libel would probably bo unnecessary.
A statement regarding the Mokau lands was made at Christchurch by Sir James Carroll, but the misreporting of one sentence rather seriously altered the whole moaning. According to the report, the native owners were only paid 80 per cent, of tho value of their property, afi ascertained by tho Valuer-General, but the statement actually made by Sir James Carroll was: “Finally, the native owners were paid £25,000, being over 80 per cent, abovo the value upon the land by the Valuer-General/*
