FAILING TO REGISTER
A CONSCIENTIOUS OBJECTOR FIXED FOUR POUNDS. Three youths camo before Mr AV. G. Riddell S.M., in tho Magistrate s Court Yesterday charged with having faded to register under tho new Defence Act. Lieutenant Rassam appeared on hohalf of tho Defence Department. William Cornish, for whom Mr 1. J. O’Regan appeared, pleaded guilty. _ Mr O’Rcgan said he realised that Ins Worship had J o administer the law. nut defendant desired to say (and Ins father was in complete agreement with Mm in saying it) that he felt compelled, on conscientious grounds, to object to compulsory military training) and intended to take the consequences. He was fined M, with costs 7s, or twei/y-cno days’ imprisonment. Thomas McGregor and Thomas Scoring© wore similarly charged. Scoringc pleaded guilty, but McGregor did not appear. Lieutenant E-assam staged that both the defendants had now registered. They were convicted and discharged.
