NOTES ON THE RACING Backers again led off by going very strongly for Equltas in tho Winter Oats, in which Tumut had nearly as many supporters. After some trouble at tho barrier it rose to a good despatch. Equitae immediately streaked away in the lead, second place being in turn taken by Tumm, Vibration, Simplex, and St. Toney. The real battle commenced at the straight entrance, when St. Toney drew »;vel with Equitas, and momentarily led. AH itc Way home the pressure was on. Advance’s brilliant daughter getting the veidict from St. Toney by a dock, with Ttiruh three lengths off a head in front * f True Shot, who just boat Vibration. i'quitae'a performance must rank as one of l er best, os she carried 9.9 and ran the six fnrlonga In Imin 15soc, beating Maori .King's tjmo last year. Lovell was a strong fancy for the G* andstand Steeplechase, as it was the distance would suit him to a rv.c cy. Tho Aucklander, First Barrel, had plenty of friends, and Zant© had .nany. but nothing else was fancied. Lovell had a fairly easy task, for bo hopped off -in front, and there ho remained. Euruo kept pegging away in second dace. w! ilc First Barrel was handy most < f the wav. Lovell outjumpod everything, bis display over the timber being a treat *,o wi-nii, : and he' ran in an easy winner, *y four lengths from Extras. with Corona a Jeigtli off, followed by First Barrel, Defeat, and Castout. Zanto came down at the firstjump. Cochran© getting a ratner nasty tumble, but he was eodn all -ght. It is* a pity Lovell cannot stay a bit 1 otter, for ho is a magnificent jumpor. c likes to ran along in front, winning all his races that way. but two miles *ml a half eeems about the length of hfs r s*her. Backers followed up their nick I v sorting out Melologue for tho Balgownio Hack Handicap/ and again tho judgment was correct. Projectile slightly beat nor from the barrier, but before going a hundred I yards the Advance filly got to .'Tie front and there ehc remained to tho ft, job Windage ran up at the back, f ml n- raing the bond Strategist shot into .court pJace. From tho cntraq.ee to the straight Sandy Haul made a good ran, bat nothing could bring Mololocruc to tho whip, ana .bo won quite easily by a length and a ; alf. S„ dv Paul beat Projectile by a length with Morrio Emerald. Windage, and Composed next in order. With John, Lethean, and Barton sc i: tched in tho Batar Hack Hurdles, tho field was reduced to half a dozen. After his good showing on Wednesday there was very solid support for Patrobus . blc tl (so who saw Euroco perform at Ilawcra wrr.ld not hear of hs defeat, and pled *n tho money bo solidly that ho started ft.vourito. It was a particularly pretty *»n tl rongliout between Euroco, Patrobns, *1 Mcrrio Lawn, who disnutod tho lead for i cst of the journey, all jumping exceedingly well As they entered the homo stretch M<rrio .Lawn was just in front, but here Vat rob us showed more pace than the ethers, and won hy over tw olengths. Morrie Lawn beat Euroco by a neck. IVNiI vis five lengths og fourth, with ‘-orbclle two lengths farther back- Clemain struck hard at tho hardlo opposite the 'jftand, and ram© down, throwing Abbott over his head. Ihe rider fractured hia collarl>onc. Seven turned out for the May Hurdles, and with Ribstone Pippin engaged backers

were not long making up their minds which to make favourite, although Marton also carried a lot of money. The race was not very exciting, for To Whetu .lumped smartly away, and leading the whole way. never gave anything else a chance, winning very ciu-dly by nearly two lengths. One of the best races of the meeting was tho Empire Handicap. Punters stuck to Cheddar, despite an indifference performance on the first day. Mulga. Bill led off past the stand from Chcacar, Lady Frances ami Vi. The last-named then appeared to bo galloped on. and foil back. Mulga Bill made tho pace solid down the back, where Cheddar, fiunbomict. Lady Frances, and Kauroa were next, with Irr.nui, who bad been last, making her way through. Vi ran up into third place before tho bend was readied, where Snnbonnet tackled tho leader. Mulga Bill was still full of running. however, and won a great race by a neck. Iranui came at a great paceArom the distance. Kauroa was a. bare length off third, a nock in front of Vi, who just boat Snnbonnet, with Cheddar next. Tho Farewell Handicap was a good hotting race. Amaru and Mortite wore the public fancies, but most of the twelve runners were backed. ’Hie race was run in semi-darkness, and the colours were hard to distinguish. At the tT.st attempt Mr Skipwilh got them off to an excellent start. Kina and Amaru word first to begin, but Tobin was soon in second place, and ho got by and led Amaru into tho straight. The field was bunched at the distance, but over the last hit Aruako came with a v:ct sail ou the outside and won by nearly two lengths from Lady Kilcheran, who just beat Gold Circle, with Ama.ru, Kini, and Mortite close up. Tho winner got a bad run on the first day in tho Electric Handicap, but finished at a great pace, and those who had noted this drew a nice dividend, the biggest of the **ay.
