ACCLIMATISATION
WELLINGTON SOCIETY. Dealing with tho work done at the Wellington Society’s game farm at Faraparaumu during tho year, the council of. the sock-tv in its annual report states that notwithstanding tho best endeavours of tho curator (Mr Rosa), tho raising of birds at tho farm has not resulted so satisfactorily as lost year, owing to the depredations of stoats- weasels, cats, and hawks. These vermin aro increasing so rapidly as to make it almort impossible to save the birds from destruction. Tho number of birds reared during the part season was: Pheasants 150. ducks 147: total 297. Now on tho farm: Pheasants 60, ducks 70. dear 48. RED DEER. Tho rod doer at tho gome farmoontinno to do well. After careful consideration, tho council decided not to recommend the opening of tho reserves at Paraparaumn and. IYainni-o-Tnnta this season. The ncwly-cstaMished herds were supplemented this year as follows:—Tanherenikau 3 hinds. Waingawa 3 stags. Fkctahnra. 2 stag*, Maungataroro 2 stags. Wainui-o-mn/a 1 stag: 3 and 2 hinds were liberated near the Chart river. For tho past season the revenue derived from door stal-dug licenses was £2lO 2s. and this will probably bo exceeded during tho present season. HAURANGI RESERVE. Owing to tho deer being so numerous 1 on tho’ Hanrangi reserve, the whole of the reserve wa« on the recommendation of the council, thrown oren to stalkers for ono year. Tho herds established at Pnrapnraumit, Wafnui, and on tho Tararnaa aro all reported to bo increasing. _ There nro not bo inn.rir deer this vear in the immediate vfcfnitv of Paraparaumn. which ceomg to prove that the deer are going back into tho ranges and spreading."
