Sir Edgar Speyer, the well-known hanker, speaking at the Liberal Colonial Club, said that by our lending capital at 1 per cent, cheaper inside than outside the Empire we were saving the colonies ' and India at least £10,0110,000 a year in interest. i Mr Asquith, who presided, remarked that £10,000,000 saved in this manner was a far mors substantial and fruitful form of iireference than any of the later devices of restoring protection, under which neither the colonies nor the Motherland had ever profited.
