AUSTRALIA TO CANADA FEDERAL MINISTER REPLIES TO REPRESENTATIONS. By Tc!2sra-ph—Press Association—Copyri?u*. MELBOURNE. May 24. Mr W. M. Hughes, Acting-Prime Minister of Australia, discussing the statement (conveyed to him hy letter) by Mr Holman. Acting-Premier oi New South Wales, that tho New South Wales Government has felt some concern in tho matter of,the maintenance of a regular mail service between Sydney and Vancouver, and suggesting that Mr Hughes should communicate with Mr Fisher, now in London, with a view of approaching Sir Wilfrid Laurier, declared that it would be preferable to tho Commonwealth and not a State to take action. There were no insuperable difficulties in the way of arranging such a service as Mr Holman desires to see. Mr Hughes addedrihat upon a satisfactory settlement of the question of Australian-Canadian reciprocity a shipping scheme would follow naturally. The only obstacle to tho granting of a Commonwealth subsidy to a service touching at New Zealand would then be removed.
