LOWER HUTT'S NEW HALL
OPENED FOP SKATING LAST NIGHT. , Sufficient' progress lias been mado .with tho new.theatre which : is being:.erected, by -Mr J. »T. Hawthorne at the lipttGW enable the auditorium space to bo now used for skating; and ‘roller-skating, was commenced there last evening. There was a. largo attendance of skaters and spectators. The hall has been erected as a portion of..tho present .Town Hall buildings. M.r Hawthorne himself prepared the designs. and the construction is being. oar--ried out by * his own workmen '.under his supervision. The hall is built of reinforced concrete, with steel “mansard” roofing. The only timber used is in the floor. The floor area of the auditorium is 60 feet by 123 feet. For theatricals a/ curtain will h© used to partition off a portion of the length, but there will still be room, with the ga’lory, for seating 1000 persons. Tho str.ge '8 60 feet by.4o feet, with . proscenium 30 feet wide and 20 feet high. An electric 1 light plant of 35 horse-power is to be installs i, suction gas being Ibo generating factor. This will give sufficient current to light tho whole of the Town na» dw > uiigs—shops, municipal offices, library, club-rooms, and theatre inclusive.. It will also supply the current for an up-to-date moving-picture piunt now being installed.
