Mr M. Bayard Brown, of the yacht Valfreya, Brightlingsea. has been ordered in the law courts to pay income tax, his Income being estimated by a surveyor of taxes at £IO,OOO a year. Mr Brown, who is as eccentric as he is wealthy, lives life of an anchorite. Twenty years ago he bought the Talfreya, a large steam yacht, and anchored, 200 yards from the shore at Brightlingsea. Since then he has lived on board, and the vessel has never stirred from her moorings. A full crew of eighteen keeping regular watches, is : always on board, and a full head of steam is kept up night and day. The vessel is always ready do put to sea at a moment’s notice, but the order is never given. Jhe Orown claimed m court that the Valfreva was within the King's domains. Mr Brown replied that ho . had never paid harbour- dues, rates, or taxes, that he was a.
