Bateman, chief engineer of Hi* Auckland Harbour Board’s dredge Hanaai, while repairing the gear in tno bottom of the pit of the dredge, . was caught in a pipe which became twisted round other portions of the machinery. Mr Bateman was in danger of being crushed to. death, when the eerand engineer stopped the engines. . Bateman sustained severe internal injuries,, the nature of which has not been ascertained.
