PETONE BOROUGH

MEETING OF THE COUNCIL. The Petone Borough Council met last evening, the Mayor (Mr J. \V. McEwan) presiding. ~ „ . Tiie Napier Borough Council notified, that it had been presented with a largely signed petition praying that the exhibition cf pictures on Sundays be prohibited. It inquired if pictures were permitted on Sundays in Petone, or if the council had be&n approached t 9 prohibit them. It was decided that picture exhibitions within the Pefcone Borough on Sundays bo prohibited, and that the Napier Council bo notified to this effect. The Public Health Department notified that it was about to adopt more stringent methods with regard to the destruction of rats, and take other measures considered necessary to prevent plague from spreading* in the Dominion. It suggested that to this end the council authorise forthwith a house to house inspection of the borough and prompt prosecution, cf all persons who fail to comply with the existing by-laws. It was decided to instruct the sanitary to give special attention to the destruction of rats within the. borough. The Hutt Valley Trotting Club wrote asking for a permanent right to race at a fixed rental on the land at present leased by it from the council. . It was decided that the club be granted a loose fox two days in the year for seven years, tho conditions to be fixed later. The Hutt Park committee notified that it was recommending to the Petone and Lower Hutt Councils to each contribute ,£65 towards the upkeep of tho park for the current year. The Eastbourne Council. it stated, would be asked to contribute the sum of <£2o. Tlie Wellington City Council wrote in regard to a previous communication stating that it had no objection to the council making application to the Government to come within the Wellington city area in regard- to slaughtering at the abattoirs. The abattoirs committee of the Wellington Council now desired to know what decision the borough had come to in regard to tlie matter. The council considered the letter in committee, and it was reported that developments are expected short!v by which it is bored to com© to a satisfactory arrangement. The Valuation Department notified that June sth had been fixed as the date for a sitting of the Assessment Court to bear objections to the revised volucs in the Petone Borough. Councillor Burridge was appointed to fill the vacancy in the Hutt Bark - committee rendered vacant bv the resignation cf ex-Councillor Southgate. Two oases of infectious diseases were reported within the borough. DRAINAGE PROPOSALS. The Mayor mentioned the matter of a new* drainage system for the borough. The he considered, should take some steps in regard t to this matter. There were two systems under consideration—the Shone system (which was used in Wellington) and tho combined system, which was in vogue in the Old Country. He asked the council which system it thought # should be adopted. Councillor Ladder said there* was little good to be derived from going into the matter if th© borough could not afford the expenditure which a .new drainage system would entail.
