Mr AlcGoweu, New South Wales Premier, speaking at the Browning settlement at Walworth, denied the truth of newspaper, statements .that Socialism had expelled the Bible. There /were 3,000,000. square miles of Australia, and an individual could not build up a fine character unless ho looked to a higher being. Materialists had not made themselves felt in Australia. The State told the clergy that the schools were open to them to impart religious instruction. Ho added that reformers in 1 promoting legislation to improve industrial conditions had received some assistance of a perfunctory kind from the churches and .other parties.
