Mr A. A. Thomson, managing director of the Karamea Steam,ship Company, is recovering from his recent illness, and expects to he about in a week or so. The ketch Lizzie Taylor arrived at Wellington on Saturday morning with produce from Timaru. She left Timaru on Tuesday morning, but was becalmed off Akaroa until Friday. The ketch was off Lyttelton at 12.30 p.m. on Friday, and then came ou to Wellington in less than 23 hours- During the southerly blow one of the main-, sheets carried away, and the lifeboat was damaged. The Lizzie Tajdor is to load timber at Havelock for Timaru. Mr E.' Sinclair, assistant purser of tho Tarawera, has been admitted to the Christchurch hospital to undergo au operation c or appendicitis. On completion of discharge of her cargo “ram Calcutta. * the -.Waitexnata will leave Dunedin for Newcastle to load coal for Wellington, Lyttelton and Timaru. TYSER BOATS COMING. Three Tyser steamers are expected at Wellington this week. The Niwaru, from London via ports; is expected on Wednesday: the Star of Canada, from London via ports, should arrive about Friday: and on the following day the Star of Australia, from New York via ports, should bo among the arrivals. NEW PATEA STEAMEE. TENDERS FOE WOODEN BOAT. Tho expansion of trade from Patea to Wellington has prompted the Patea Shipping Company to call privately for tenders for the building in New Zealand of a new wooden, steamer to cope with next scaeon s frozen produce output from Patea, # The now vessel ie to be designed on similar lines to that company's steamer Kapuni, built at Auckland by W. H. Brown in 1909, and engined by Duncan and Eosa, Glasgow. Tho new boat will be TCBft in length (Bft longer than the Kapuni),'and 20ft beam (name as Kapuni). There will be installed the latest type of refrigerating plant, and the two holds, which will .both be insulated, will have' d' capacity of 1000 quarters of beef/ or 3000 ;carcases-of mutton, or 4000 boxes of butter, or 1500 crates of cheese. It has not been decided whether the vessel's engines will be imported or constructed in New Zealand. They will be compound .surfare-condeusing engines capable of giving a speed of nine knots. The company will decide,, within about a week, as to - which builders will receive the order. Tho vessel is to bo ready for sea in about six months. About half : a dozen tenders have come -to hand.

ARRIVED AT MELBOURNE, Last Thursday the Tyscr liner Star of Scotland arrived at Melbourne after a gooa passage of 41 days from- London. The vessel is expected to arrive at Wellington about .Tun© 17th. . WAITEMATA FROM CALCUTTA. The recent southerly gale considerably delayed the Union Company's steamer Waitemata (from Calcutta) on. her passage from Auckland. She left Auckland at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, and had fine to moderate weather till off Castlepoint, at 3 a.m. on Friday, when a full south-easterly gale and high head seas were encountered. The Waitemata battled with the gale right round the coast till arrival here at- 7 o'clock yesterday. ' The vessel berthed at No. 6, Queen s wharf. The Waitemata left Oamaru some months ago for Newcastle, and proceeded thence • to- Hobart and Port Huon to load sleepers Tor Bombay. Tho vessel then went to Calcutta and loaded 4055 tons of gunnies, oils, bonemeal, tea, coffee, and pig-iron for New Zealand. She left Calcutta on April 11th, cleared the Hoogley on the same evening, and had fine weather to Singapore, where she arrived early on April 18th, The vessel loaded 611 tons of-piues, tapioca, rattanware, pepper and spices, and sailed on th© afternoon of the following day. Samarang was reached on the 22nd. and after loading 4544 ba.es of kapok th© voyage was resumed at midnight.- Fine weather r pr©- : vailed till after passing Goode Island, near Thursday Island, then strong south-easter-ly winds prevailed till; near the. Three Kings. Fine weather then lasted till ar,rival at Auckland, where 262'“tons of cargo were discharged. The Waitemata has 1832 tons to.put out at Wellington, and, is expected to sail this evening for southern ports with remainder of cargo.

NEW STEAMER MUEITAL The Wellington Harbour Ferries expect to Launch their new tug Aluritai either tomorrow or on Wednesday. The -vessel is to take the water alongside the Taranaki street wharf. : BAKANOA HAS BOUGH TBIP. The* collier Rakanoa (Capfain Carson), arrived- at Wellington on Saturday after- ■ ( noon coal-laden from Westport after a j somewhat prolonged'' passage. She left , Westport on Wednesday morning, and on entering Cook Strait ran into a heavy south-easterly ga’e. which nourly increased in violence. The Bakanoa went into an anchorage at Long Island at 2 a.m. on Thursday. At‘l p.m. on Friday'the Bakanoa. resumed her way, and found that the gale still raged, but from the south. As the vessel was deep-laden the Bakanoa ; went well to the southward to got a lead for port. The engines were reduced to half-speed, but the seas swept along the decks a‘most continuously. The vessel came into port without mishap, notwithstanding a severe handling by iho elements.. VICTORIA IN'. A GALE. ! The Victoria, which arrived at Wellington at midday on Saturday from Sydney, via Auckland, Gisborne and Napier, ex- : perienced a very rough passage from Gis- . borne to Wellington- The vessel approach- ’ ed the Napier wharf at 6 p.m. on Thursday, but as there was no one there to ; take the. lines the Victoria headed out again.
